Lakou Mizik’s new album highlights Haiti’s creative spirit

The multigenerational band Lakou Mizik’s new album, “Depart the Bones,” is an homage to the group’s native Haiti.

The album, a collaboration with Grammy-winning digital music artist Joseph Ray, contains singles like “Ogou (Pran Ka Mwen),” “Lamizè Pa Dous” and “Bade Zile,” or “Beneath the Island,” which intention to reframe — or somewhat, smash — detrimental, stereotypical views of Haiti and its tradition.

“I believe that you just can not describe a rustic by solely what you see on the information,” band member Steeve Valcourt mentioned. “So, what we [are] hoping to do, personally, in ‘Lakou Mizik’ is to indicate the opposite aspect of Haiti, which is the tradition, the love, the oneness, , that’s the purpose of it, the fantastic thing about Haiti.”

The band mines the standard music canon of Haiti and injects it with rhythms from reggae, hip-hop and digital music.
